As you lace up your cleats and sharpen your pencils, it's time to gear up for a winning season – both in the classroom and on the field. Let's dive into how you can set yourself up for an MVP-worthy school year by mastering targets (goals), routines, time management, and quality sleep.


Set Clear Targets

  • Academics: Set specific academic milestones by knowing exactly WHAT you want to improve on and HOW you will go about doing so. What micro targets (that are in your control) can you hit daily that will inch you closer to your Wildly Important Targets (WIT’s)?

  • Athletics: Aim to enhance your quality at-bat average, improve fastball velocity, or first step quickness and/or your mental strength. Once again, what micro targets (that are in your control) can you hit daily that will inch you closer to your Wildly Important Targets (WIT’s)?

  • Double Play: Whether it's acing that calculus exam or improving your mindset/physical skills, envisioning your accomplishments and breaking them down into actionable steps will propel you towards the results you’re after.


Craft Your Academic and Athletic Game Day Routines/Process

  • Academics: Design a study zone free from distraction (both internal and external) where you can hit the books with laser focus, just like you do in the batter's box. Putting your phone out of sight and/or turning notifications off is HUGE here.

  • Athletics: Create a pre-game ritual that primes you for excellence – journal your intentions, then plant the seeds for future success by visualizing your performance and seeing yourself showing up and showing out as the best, most confident version of you.

  • Double Play: Design a structured daily process that seamlessly weaves together your academic study sessions and athletic practice, ensuring a smooth transition that optimizes your performance in both realms. When you switch from hitting the books to hitting the field, start by reviewing your goals for the session ahead. Visualize acing that upcoming test or nailing your pitches. This tailored routine will help you effortlessly conquer the double play of excelling in school and baseball.

Master the Clock: Time Management Tactics

  • Academics: Using the targets you’ve set as a guide, allocate your time towards subjects that require greater effort while making sure to bake in time for breaks and other subjects as well.

  • Athletics: Have set times for mindset training, batting practice, fielding drills, and gym workouts. This will lead to purposeful practice (graphic below) as you prioritize specific areas of improvement and allocate your time accordingly.

  • Double Play: Time is the greatest equalizer as we all have the same amount of it. So, make the most of your time by creating a balanced routine and setting fixed time blocks for study hours/practice sessions. By focusing entirely on the task at hand, whether it's a tough academic exercise or a challenging drill, you'll be ON purpose WITH purpose, maximizing your efficiency and success.

Slumber for Success: Prioritize Quality Sleep

  • Academics: Prioritize sleep for optimal brain function – a well-rested mind is just as important in the classroom as it is on the field. 

  • Athletics: Sleep in the #1 performance enhancer. Approach sleep like it’s a sport so that you can speed up recovery and recharge for peak performance during games.

  • Double Play: By getting consistent quality sleep, you'll be better able to tackle both academic and baseball challenges with unwavering energy, grit and focus.
